A Complete Guide to
Japanese Underground Idol Live
Culture

The Culture, First

A close-distance, interactive world that differs greatly from idol culture elsewhere.

01

Underground Idols

Underground Idol Culture

It is not only about singing and dancing — the appeal is in supporting their growth journey. In intimate venues, fans attend regularly, chat, and cheer on social media, walking alongside their "oshi" for years.

02

Cheki

Cheki — The Instant Photo

A cheki (instant photo) is tangible proof of your connection. Since physical contact is prohibited, the culture grew around two-shot photos and a short chat. Photos develop on the spot, with room for a signature or date.

03

Penlight

The Penlight Color

A support item that paints the venue in your oshi’s color. Each member has a designated color, and movements or colors change per song — an essential part of a Japanese live that builds unity among fans.

04

Calls & Wotagei

Calls & Wotagei

Calls are synchronized chants timed to the song — a ritual of participation. Wotagei is fan choreography that shows passion. No pressure for first-timers: watch the crowd first and join when you feel ready.

05

Taiban

Taiban — Shared Bills

An event where several idol groups perform together, each for 20–30 minutes. A perfect chance to discover new groups — enjoy every act with respect, not just your favorite.

On the Day

Five Steps for the Day

From booking your ticket to paying — what to prepare, in the order it happens.

01

Get Your Ticket

Pre-purchase via the official site or SNS for peace of mind. Entry is by numbered order (printed on your ticket). Door tickets may appear if not sold out, and some events have English-speaking staff.

02

Prepare a Penlight

Buy at the venue booth, or at Don Quijote and 100-yen shops. Check your oshi’s color on SNS beforehand. Choose a single-color cyalume (beginner-friendly) or a multi-color electronic penlight.

03

Enjoy the Live

Join the calls, clap, jump, and copy the choreography for a shared feeling of unity. Stay considerate of those around you, and start by simply soaking in the atmosphere.

04

Merch & Cheki Time

CDs, photos, stickers, T-shirts and more. A cheki runs roughly ¥1,000–2,000 each (extra for a signature). Buy a ticket, wait your turn, then enjoy the photo and a short chat.

05

Pay Cashless

Beyond cash, we accept Square payments (Visa / Mastercard / Apple Pay and more). Having small change on hand keeps things smooth.
